TUESDAY, MAY 16, 2018

I hope you all had a great Mother's Day weekend.  I enjoyed my family in various events all throughout the week end.  They spoiled me, but the best part was just spending time with my mother, kids and grand kids.

This week at a glance.

  • For poetry/writing, we are memorizing "If" by Rudyard Kipling.  It will be recited by the whole fifth grade at the graduation ceremony. This poem is a p erfect graduation poem because it highlights virtue and perseverance, something so needed by young people embarking on a new beginning.   Please encourage your scholar to memorize these lines to the best of his or her ability.  We suggest recording their recitation and then playing it back over and over.  It would be a good family discussion to sit down and talk about such masterful lines as (If you can) "watch the things you gave your life to, broken and stoop and build 'em up again with worn out tools:" ... "you’ll be a Man, my son!"  We hope it is an enjoyable endeavor to commit this poetic masterpiece to memory.
  • We continue our study of the endocrine system with the test coming this Friday, May 18th.  Students should spend 5-10 minutes each day reviewing their notes; this can be done in Lyceum, at home, or during morning work.
  • Monday, May 21st will be our chemistry "in-school" field trip.  It will be a "cooking" chemistry lab.  I hope the scholars are as excited as I am!
History
  • We are studying Native Americans: Cultures and Conflicts this week.
  • I am encouraging scholars to write detailed answers to any questions they get in history.  We have been using this time to hone their writing-for-purpose skills.

Graduation

5th Grade Graduation will be held on Thursday, March 24th in the Chandler Prep Gymnasium.
Doors open at 9:15 and the ceremony begins at 9:30. Please enter through the CPA Gym doors on the east side of the building.
Reception to follow in the Multipurpose Room.

All family members and friends are welcome.  If you plan to take any siblings that will be in class, please give yourself some extra time to come to the front desk while the front office staff gets them out of class and you sign them out.  Those children will need to return to class after the ceremony as the reception is for graduates and parents only.  We will ask that you sign them back in before attending the reception in the MPR.

May 12, 1.30 pm - Revised version

Thank you all so much for all of the encouragement and appreciation this week.  Reading those comments on how the children have grown and been strengthened, encouraged, and feel loved by what we do makes it all so worth while.  Thank you!  We appreciate you and all that you do for our kidos.

IMPORTANT DATES
Culinary Chemistry in school field trip: May 21st

We are memorizing a fantastic poem for the graduation ceremony that embodies all that we are hoping the students will take with them as they graduate from Archway.  It is the poem "If" by Ruyard Kipling.  Please discuss the virtues outlined in the poem and help your student really understand it and make the ideals a part of their character.

The memorization timeline is as follows:

Paragraph 1: 5/11 - It was kind of disheartening today, because many kids did not know this today!  I am sending home another copy of the poem on Bright Yellow paper - please help your child memorize it.

Paragraph 1&2: 5/14
Paragraph 1-3: 5/16
Paragraph 1-4: 5/18

On each date your scholar has the opportunity to earn 10 points toward their poetry grade in Language Arts.  When they do not know it it pulls down their grade.

Hello 5A,

No school this Friday as it is a teacher grading day.

What we're up to this week AND next week:

ELA - We have wrapped up Across Five Aprils.   Please let me know if you'd like to come in and lead a reading group for A Wrinkle In Time between 8:30-9:10 am any weekday; we begin reading that novel today.  Students are not required to have a copy of the book though they may bring one if they choose.
In grammar, we are looking at personal pronouns and their antecedents as well as indefinite pronouns.  The next grammar test will be Thursday 5/10.   Next week's vocabulary will be "graph=writing."  Lists are at the bottom of this update.

Math - we continue to cover angle properties as found on straight lines, around points, in triangles, in quadrilaterals, and now in parallelograms.  Each day, we usually derive a new angle property (or properties) for a special condition or shape.  It is extraordinarily important that your scholar memorize these properties, or rules.  I have given very clear and concise notes.  If your scholar has misplaced these notes, he or she may check in their textbook or copy the notes from a classmate during Lyceum.  The unit 11 test will be Thursday, 5/10, after two full days of review.

Science - We tested on the nervous system yesterday and began the endocrine system.  Please note that the human body discussion will take place next Thursday, 5/10, and Friday, 5/11.  Please contact Ms. Carlson at scarlson@archwaychandler.org if you have any questions.

History - we will briefly look at westward expansion after the Civil War with an open-note, open book test on Wednesday, 5/9.  We will then take a look at Native American cultures and conflicts.

Spelling for NEXT week (test Friday, 5/11):
autobiography, autograph, bibliography, biography, cartography, homograph, paragraph, phonograph, photography, seismograph

Have a wonderful weekend!
